Autumn

Do you remember the old house we told stories about?
and the swings on the towering trees
where you first learned that your young bones could break?
Roman numerals on your 14th birthday cake.
And the old apple cider hat we lay out all winter
and took us to that deep and gentle sleep.
you next to me.
stopping your car
by the side of the road
shrouded in fog with no hazard lights on
you lamented loudly while you pounded your knees
that each of us in turn must become a memory
but autumn…
with your feet on the stairs
and the hem of your dress.
well that season taught me well:
loving helps you learn to be alone.
like pulling the tabs off of empty soda cans.
and in your old room
in your old cozy chair
your father with a blank and empty stare
hands on his knees.
stopping your car
by the side of the road
shrouded in fog you turn the hazard lights on
you whispered quietly, your head hung low
you said: “there might be worse things to be than in your memory.”
But autumn and its cruelty staid in me
[peaceful when we laid you down in autumn]
but I do wish you well and I hope that you’re fine
and smiling where you are
somewhere out there with the lights and the dark
but I’m tired and alone
on the last train home.

The tap of flat-soled shoes on a hardwood floor
and the aching squeak of cabinets
in the place where I don’t sleep anymore
and the people who inhabit it
And the falling leaves around you and me
remind me that someday I’ll leave
The ticking of the clock in the room
and the way it used to madden you
The whistle of trains you’ve never heard
to a place you’ve never seen.
I’ll never know what made me run
or why I took off my shirt
Old life walk me home
you can even stay a while
it’s New Years Eve in a small town
and I think that I should go
If you asked me what I knew
I’d say I had nothing to do
with the ticking clock and the tapping shoes
and the bustling trains that make me think of you
Old life walk me home
you can even stay a while
it’s New Years Eve in my home town
and I think that I should go
when the snow comes down will you call me?
as the years wind down where will I be?
